The Certified Telehealth Physician Program has been written and reviewed with The Joint Commission surveyors as an acceptable competency.

The Telehealth Certification program consists of 6 sections, each containing an independent CME course with its own CME certificate awarded for successful passage through the section.  Upon completion of the program, you will have earned 6 CME certificates and a Certified Telehealth Physician Certificate, an important document to show patients, regulatory agencies, insurance companies, and licensure organizations that the education and competency has been gained to provide telehealth services.

Telehealth is the use of electronic means or technology to provide mental health services by any mental health discipline.  It is not a separate medical or mental health service.  It is simply a different means through which a physician can deliver services that have historically been delivered in person in the mental health field.  Telehealth is discipline neutral, meaning that all mental health disciplines can use the technology modality to provide services.

The research into telehealth has consistently shown it to be an effective delivery system for mental health services.  Some studies have even found that telehealth services may actually be preferable to in-person care in certain populations and situations. Children, adolescents, and veterans in particular, seem to especially benefit from the use of telehealth.  Telehealth is NOT the be-all and end-all in the delivery of therapy.  Nor is it for every patient or every physician.  Clearly, there are limitations.  The limitations may be driven by a particular physician’s level of skill or confidence in treating certain cases online.

The dearth of guidance on telehealth delivery from leading professional organizations has increased confusion and left physicians and the patients they care for vulnerable.  Studies have shown that less than half of the practices are in compliance with current standards.  The very basics of physician to patient interactions need to be examined in order to maximize the effectiveness of this new technology so that our patients will receive the care they deserve and physician practices will remain financially healthy.  The goal of the Certified Telehealth Physician Program is provide the right knowledge so that physicians may concentrate on what they do best, treating their patient’s mental illness.

Becoming a Certified Telehealth Physician will show patients, regulatory agencies, and licensure organizations that the education and competency has been gained to provide telehealth services.  The Program consists of 6 courses:

  • Telehealth Professional Orientation – 1.5 CME
  • Telehealth Patient – Practitioner Protocol – 2.25 CME
  • Telehealth Disclosure and Informed Consent – 2.0 CME
  • Telehealth Technology – 2.0 CME
