According to HIPAA regulation, health professionals must be fully HIPAA compliant in order to avoid serious violations and government fines.
Over riding all of what is done for patients in telehealth is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. Violation of HIPAA standards, whether purposeful or not, carry stiff penalties and may be treated as a criminal offense. It is the responsibility of every provider to know the rules and how they are applied in the highly sensitive care of patients. This course is designed to provide knowledge and practical understanding of HIPAA in the context of a telehealth setting.
