Share a negotiating experience and how did you feel about the result? How does your practice or organization make capital budget decisions. How do you make a purchase request and what is the framework for that request to be approved?

My dog Sugar, a yellow lab, suddenly took ill at the grand old age of 12. I was not sure what the problem was but she was having urination issues, lethargy, and would not eat. Now a Lab who does eat, that is extremely concerning. We took her in and the Vet diagnosed a urinary tract infection that I thought, being a physician, had probably as…[Read more]

I think you have an idea for a PDSA project. Problem , time involvement of MIPS. Consider KQC. One must be the estimate time requirements. That can be as easy as keeping a pad and pencil on you to using your dell phone to capture the time requirement. Create a small team of stakeholders, no more the 4 and go through the process. Great comment Kelly. You have described the essence of “Quality Leadership”. Problem is we see this form of leadership all to rarely in healthcare. Having the confidence to give up control is a key feature of leadership although not so easily done by those of us trained in the healthcare system. My favorite article on the subject is in the…[Read more]

I have observed a hospital based practice for years. Same leaders over that period of time. The physician director keeps a low profile. He follows the lead of the hospital CMO and rarely interacts independently at the department level. His chief administrator (CA) is a nurse who has no formal business training but lots of experience. Her lead…[Read more]

OK, I will start this thread. One thing was consistent throughout my entire time in practice, and it did not matter what setting, private, HMO, military, hospital employed. I agree Tamy. The quickest way to achieve engagement of your team members in any meeting is to insure their is a democratic culture. The reason someone is on the team in the first place is that they have a valuable contribution to make. That contribution can be suppressed by poor meeting dynamics. Both brainstorming and brain writing idea…[Read more]

Very nice Cheryl! It sounds like you have already embraced a concept that sounds pretty much like creating and engaged team.
