I’ve learned a lot over the past year of hiring 9 new providers at our organization-and seeing some of them leave voluntarily or not within the same year. We’ve used a mix of the formal & informal interview process, with 1/2 the day of formal interview with our administrative team and 1/2 the day with the providers in the clinic the new doc will…[Read more]

I think overall most organizations do a poor job in recruitment. Many large organizations have admin do the hiring, which does not account for adequate clinic practice and culture assessment and when the docs get involved it is too late and we do not afford it the time it deserves. Often, we hope disruptive docs will not want to continue in a…[Read more]

Our group is very democratic, and I want to believe that if I wanted to access to group financial statements and my own profit/loss numbers I would be able to access them. The reason I have not done that is that the leaders of the group have been very transparent about the groups earnings/losses, future direction, hiring/firing, etc. These are all…[Read more]

There are two major problems currently facing our practice.
The first one is our phone call answering algorithm. We still get patients stating that they are not able to get through to staff during normal business hours. Some say the number rings and rings endlessly and others say they leave messages and never get called back. One way to determine…[Read more]

I have limited access to our profit loss statements and previously I did not have much interest in them. Now I do. Last month the Hospital I work for eliminated the pediatrics department based on budget concerns. This blindsided all the physicians working in this hospital. Apparently hospital administration was looking at the financials one way an…[Read more]

One of the worst meetings I ever ran was when we were trying to rework our mission statement. Nobody could agree on anything, and whenever we were close, someone would come up with another idea. It took about 45 minutes until I could finally take it off line and get it into a smaller group. It wes very hard to regain control…

My interest lies in the nonprofit that I have a leadership roll in.
I want to believe the graphs that are created for the board’s review but understand that the sheets and pages of financial data can be blinding. This was a helpful first step at an approach to diving into the reports. Thank you.

I would agree with the prior statements. This financial statement is all over the place and does more to confuse than to provide actionable information. While this has been the method most healthcare organizations follow, it seems as though times may be changing with more realistic accounting.
Another issue in many institutions I have worked with…[Read more]
