Hi Gretchen. As we say in the course, empirical data is extremely important. It represents where the rubber hits the road because those are the results you see right in front of you. Clinical trials get us to pay attention to a particular treatment but it is what happens in front of us that really makes the difference. Problem is the emp…[Read more]

Welcome Stephanie
It is our pleasure to have someone with so much practical experience in the class. Empirical evidence is a very important factor in choosing therapy for patients. Data driven, double blind, clinical trails from academic medical centers are important but empirical evidence stands strong as well.

I know this has nothing to do with Capital but I like dog cartoons.
Describe the capital budgeting process in your organization. Is it fair? What are the metrics used to characterize the financial elements of the purchase? Is the process transparent?

Seeing a written out, organized business plan in any healthcare setting is like seeing a unicorn in the middle of the road on your way home. They exist, but rarely are they shared with the medical staff even though it is you who will be performing under that plan. As a provider, when admin comes in to begin a new service line or make a ca…[Read more]

Welcome to the Class.
Think about leaders you have worked with. If you could describe the good leader do so. It might be a little more fun and instructive to describe the not so good leadership. No identifiers please, either way. What could the not so good one do to improve?

What is you experience with Advanced Care Planning and Medicare’s new CPT codes. Has it become a routine part of your practice? Do you view it as a profitable activity? What is the process to provide this service in your practice?

I can’t count the number of times I was stuck with a sharps in my career. Never did I report the incident. I am sure I had reasons but they are hard to recall. Needless to say I was lucky.
What are your concerns about accidental needle sticks at work? Is it something you even think about? Are you more or less likely to report the inciden…[Read more]

“Our hospital always says it is losing money. An impossibility in Maryland. The idea behind creating value and being paid foe value is to increase quality and decrease cost. This theoretically should attract more patients.”
Maryland is a special case. In patient care is already paid under the preset budgeting system. Here is the thing that m…[Read more]

My name is Dave Joyce and I am your class instructor. I was an OB/GYN physician and practiced in the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, Tx. and in a small group practice in Annapolis, Md. I don’t practice anymore, but my wife does and I still retain what it was like to see patients every day and be on call. Hopefully you will get a sense from the course th…[Read more]

I have actually spoken to more than a dozen men with ED and suing a needle is a non starter for them despite the fact that the results are so predictable. A Lenis device would be an overwhelming positive addition for all of them.

With new tech the distinction between approved and unapproved is fuzzy. Physicians use “unapproved” devices and therapies all the time in an “off label” application. The device is approved by the FDA for injection. Is it approved for insulin? Who does the approval? Is it the payers, Medicare, FDA? What happens is that the market actually does the…[Read more]

I received this comment from Brooke Klatt:
“Also, it was a little bit confusing about FDA approval on Diabetes. In one of the slides it showed that FDA approval for Diabetes use was “*awaiting approval”, however insulin is one of the medications/indications for use. I very possibly could have missed something, which is why I found it con…[Read more]
