Dave, I believe as you do that education is vital to any change. Without people speaking up and getting some kind of critical mass to effectuate change through education, people leave the organization ASAP. They become frustrated and disenchanted with management not the work. People who bring up issues demonstrate real leadership and need to ask…[Read more]

I am sure all candidates would have the necessary clinical qualifications. That being said, I would probe more on the candidates leadership skills and methods to solve problems. More specifically, I want the person to describe his leadership style and if he is experienced with process improvement methodology. I would certainly ask for examples.

Thanks for the introduction Paul.  It is great to have you with us.  I am well familiar with Beebe.  Mark Boytim from your joint center was in the last class we did with MSD.  He actually has helped us with our patient education initiative.  We have a vision of sending patients to class to educate them about their illness or condition or thei…[Read more]

The best you can do is have the right people at the meeting and then create an environment where they feel there contribution is valued. You do that and you will not only increase productivity, but you will enjoy the meetings and so will the team members. What a novel idea!!!

I have to tell you Paul, those two techniques, especially the latter are very powerful tools to mine ideas out of people who for many reasons may not feel comfortable speaking their mind.

Hi everyone, I promised the first case study and here it is. I spoke with a physician who was tasked to conduct and interview with a prospective new hire as Chief of Surgical Oncology. This physician unit is actually in the search mode for a “Director” of their unit. The interview is usually focused on the accomplishments of the candidate. What…[Read more]

Throughout history, what happens when the ruling class becomes unresponsive to the needs of the working class?  What happens when you feel your voice is not heard?  First frustration followed by change.  There are two things that catalyze change.  First is a critical mass of the disaffected.  The second is education to develop an unde…[Read more]

First introduce yourself to your fellow course mates.  After that share with us the challenges of introducing new technology to providers or patients.  What resources do you find useful in the process?
