I was OK with doing what they asked.  I wasn’t looking for compensation.  I wasn’t looking for anything at all.  I worked for the organization and felt it was my obligation to care for the patients….never thought about…still don’t…it just came to my mind….at the end of the day what really matters is caring for patients.

I’ve often thought bartering made more sense than copays and the like.   I’ll take a dozen eggs and will do an annual exam in exchange!…I’ve mentioned this to patients….I think it makes sense!

The negotiating information presented would have been very helpful in my first job post residency.

I still recall about 18 months into working for this group (an HMO), one of the doctors either retired or moved to another institution.  I was asked to take over some of her patients 1-2 days/week and seem them at the location where she worked…about 25 minutes from where I saw patients.  I wasn’t compensated for this and it wasn’t part of my contract…perhaps I should have balked at the time but I just carried on and did what they asked….live and learn?

I’m wondering how likely it is to be engaged in financial discussions in the C-suite….are these discussions simply for the higher ups?  If physicians are important players in the financial success of an institution–esp. if employed, shouldn’t they be able to attend some of these meetings?
