I have previously written submissions for new capital projects using NPV and other calculations when it is easy to show the direct economic benefit. However, in medicine, there are a number of projects that may be important that may not be so easy to show a direct financial benefit for. For instance, a new lab testing machine that is more accurate…[Read more]

Its interesting, having recently gone through the negotiation process last year, listening to these lectures. As one of the younger members of the class, my perception (and correct me if I am wrong) is that the younger physicians are starting to be more savvy about this than previously. I have had lots of open conversations with my…[Read more]

It’s interesting to me that this came from the administration down to the physicians to expand without having some planning for it. I have certainly seen it the other way, with physicians trying to add more and more. Sometimes this is due to an assumption that all endeavors are profitable. Other times, it seems that some of the drive for this is…[Read more]

Another thought to piggyback off of that, is that the situation continues to get more complex as the ‘hospital employed’ model grows. The physician’s value is more than just salary and wRVU production. There is the other added benefits to the facility that also provide value to the hospital. For procedural specialties, it is the facility fees, etc…[Read more]

At my organization, I can get, but have to ask for, the statements for my division. To my knowledge, they do not do individual statements for each physician. Additionally, this information is not available monthly. Most of the decision making is made by administrators, not the physicians, as far as I can tell.

As far as the statement for analysis…[Read more]

As a young physician, I don’t have as many stories about my own leadership style in running a practice. However, I think back to the many types of teams I have been a part of and can identify many of the good and bad things being discussed. Coming from a surgery/trauma background, many of the leadership styles in medicine I have seen are more…[Read more]

I’m fairly new to the business side of healthcare, but the thing that stands out to me on the homework sheet is the A/R section. The A/R days looks like it is staying in the 30-40 day range, which to a novice likes me seems high.

On the other hand, the bad debt as a % of charges appears to be at a reasonable level.

I’m confused by the Net…[Read more]
